This month's newsletter highlights strategies to remove toxins
from your body and mind.
Detoxification: A Missing Link to Vibrant Health and Energy
We shower, brush our teeth and wash our hair on a daily basis but
we tend to ignore cleansing our insides until some form of disease
sends us a wake-up call. Believe it our
not, our insides, especially the colon which functions as the "waste system" of
our bodies, also requires regular cleaning.
Why is colon cleansing so crucial?
We are exposed to thousands of
toxins and chemicals on a daily basis at work, in the home, through
the air we breathe, our food and water. Pollutants, chemicals, toxins, pesticides, dyes,
solvents, additives, preservatives, and coloring are found in
our cells, muscle and blood.
We no longer consume nature's pure food;
so much is artificial, processed, flavored, preserved and depleted
of nutrients and enzymes.
Meat and poultry are loaded with bacteria, parasites, antibiotics
and hormones. In addition, we are eating more sugar and processed
food than ever before in human history and regularly abuse our bodies.
The human immune system was never equipped to process this
onslaught that has altered the body's natural ability to heal.
In her book "The Detox Solution", Dr. Patricia Fitzgerald
states "the goal of detox involves strengthening the digestive
system as well as other parts of the body that are responsible for
cleaning and eliminating, including the liver and kidneys."
It improves the overall health and well-being of an
individual by enhancing the immune system so that one
is less prone to developing illness.
Do you need internal cleansing?
How do you know when it's time to free
your body of accumulated toxins, parasites and other waste material? Colon cleansing/detoxification
can be beneficial for those with one or more of the following conditions:
- Chronic constipation
- Frequent fatigue
- Impaired digestion
- Frequent colds
- Chronic allergies
- Fogginess, Memory loss

- Frequent gas and bloating
- Recurring headaches
- Bad breath
- Digestive problems
- Aches and pains
- Skin eruptions

Often we ignore these early "warning signs" and
wait until they turn into illness. Many people have become so accustomed
to feeling slightly ill that they accept their health as a natural
part of aging, when in fact it is due to unhealthy food, an unhealthy
environment and emotional toxins accumulating in the body. Aging
does not have to equate to "dis-ease and deterioration."
If you are aging well, you are experiencing traits of optimal health
such as:
- A feeling of energy that is available throughout the day
- Sleep comes easily and lasts until morning
- Digestion is comfortable
- Energy is present after meals
- Illness is rare and departs quickly
- The mind is clear and alert
- Emotions are stable
- A youthful and age-defying physical appearance is evident
- A feeling of being refreshed upon awakening

Emotional detoxification is critical to creating a healthy
body and mind. Dr. Judith Lazarus, Healing Lifestyles and Spas
magazine, September/October 2006, shares with us how to manage
stress that creates a toxic overload in our bodies and minds.

Tips from the Experts

"Spending quality time with yourself is not indulgence,
it is vital to well-being and stress management," says Sharon
Norling, M.D., M.B.A. "It's part of the balance you need
to enjoy life optimally." A doctor, author, lecturer, educator,
and medical business advisor, Norling considers herself a patient's
partner in healing. Norling is board-certified in OB/GYN, Holistic
Medicine, and Medical Acupuncture.
Life requires a constant striving for balance. Norling says everyone
should be scheduling consistent alone time.
"Sitting still while making to-do lists doesn't count," she
advises. "Block out a date with yourself on your calendar.
If you can't find fifteen minutes or more a day, then arrange
an hour every few days, but make it a commitment you don't
write off. Learn to say, ‘Sorry, I have plans' if
something intrudes, just as you would for any important appointment."
One of Norling's favorites is a warm bath and an early
bedtime. Meditation and yoga are great. "Just as I prescribe different
treatments depending on an individual's physical, emotional,
and spiritual conditions, each person can find a variety of balancing
practices for different times and moods.
What matters is that you consider the time
and space sacred. Follow
your joy, and do things that make you happy," she says. Here
are some other prescriptions Norling suggests for sacred time:
- Read. Anything that takes you away from the daily grind
beneficial, but something inspirational and uplifting is a positive
choice.
- Garden. Planting flowers and creating growth
and beauty around you, can be grounding spiritually as well as
physically.
- Have lunch or dinner alone. Treating yourself at a restaurant
with healthful food and atmosphere is an easy way to break from
the rat race.
- Get a massage or relaxing spa treatment. This works well
for your body, mind, and spirit.
- Keep a journal. If you can't write every day, at least
do it when your thoughts keep your mind from quieting.
